In one of my previous lives, pre accountancy, pre coaching, I was a historian. It is a vocational urge that has been whispering away recently as I've pondered on the past times of the profession with my father celebrating his 50th year in accountancy. I thought I'd kick off with my own story of the 'accountancy calling' and over the coming weeks I want to embellish this with anecdotes from my father's era and also hear from you. What do you remember from your days as a trainee? What was different in the profession then? Who were the characters who loomed large? What made you laugh, cry, stay, leave? Here's my story......
Hello to the trainee accountant and auditor that I met on the last train out of Manchester Oxford Road last night. He had been celebrating after completing his first 2 professional exam papers (Accounting and Auditing, I think). We had a good old chat about the trials and tribulations of the Big 4, but not forgetting the pride and privileges of being part of it all and the second-to-none training - Ok maybe we were getting a bit maudlin by then - but it was a long journey home!
Have a look at this article by Andrew Garner, writing in Accountancy Age. I have already given my resounding vote for the importance of transferable skills for the accountancy profession, as you will know if you have read my applaud of the new CPD schemes.
As the calendar year end approaches, for many accountants this also heralds the excitement (sic!) of the financial year end. Whether corporate accountant or auditor, it can also signal an intensely pressurised and stressful period. Experience will have shown that this is when many career transition decisions are made and businesses can lose some of their most coveted staff.
